From New York to Constantinople
Two sets of about 45 minutes each, BOW with the Smyrna Trio
Did you know that many of the most famous Yiddish songs and melodies are equally familiar to lovers of Greek music?
For centuries, Yiddish and Greek musicians exchanged tunes, songs and ideas in Black Sea cities such as Constantinople (Istanbul).
In 2002, Brave Old World collaborated with three of the finest living performers of traditional Greek music - Sophia Papazoglou (vocals), Kyriakos Gouvendas (violin, baglama), Yannis Alexandris (outi, guitar) - to create a program that explores the links between these two great traditions.
Until you've heard Michael Alpert and Sophia Papazoglou trade Yiddish and Greek verses on the same song, you haven't really lived.
This program will delight all audiences who can't sit still when they hear a freylekhs or a hasapiko, as well as those who've never heard of either!
